Bugs: Ticks

1 min read

Whether spending time in your backyard or deep in the woods, stay safe from harmful diseases from ticks with the following tips.

Translator: Warm weather means more outdoor time, and more active ticks. Ticks can spread harmful diseases. So whether you’re spending time in your backyard or deep in the woods, stay safe with the following tips. Wear EPA-registered repellents and long-sleeved clothes. Take things a step further, and treat your clothes and gear with products containing the insecticide permethrin. Avoid woody and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter, and walk in the center of trails. In your backyard, clear out dead leaves, which can also harbor ticks. When you get inside, check your body for ticks. And don’t forget to check your pets, too. Look for black spots and take a shower to help wash off any ticks you can’t see. If you’re bitten and develop fever, aches and pains, or a rash within a few weeks, see your health care provider. Don’t be a host. Protect yourself, and visit health.mil/bugs for more information.
